Legislative definition

Section 199 of the Labour Code defines obstacles to work, where the employer must provide us with time off and also, in specified cases, with wage compensation. Government Decree No. 590/2006 Coll. specifies these obstacles, including the minimum time off from work. In addition to moving, these include a wedding, the birth of a child, a death in the family, medical examinations or problems with transportation.

How much time off must your employer give you

The Government Decree specifies the employer’s obligation to provide time off for moving for the necessary period of time, at most 2 days, with regard to the change of residence for an employee who has his/her own housing and is moving on his/her own free will. The Labour Code is more benevolent with this provision, stating that a longer period of time off may be given if the employer agrees with the employee in advance.

Definition of own household furnishings

An employee’s own housing furnishings are understood to primarily mean furniture, appliances and any other equipment in your household. In practice, of course, nobody will check what you are moving. The sense of this provision is to limit requests for time off for those employees who are not moving their own, but rather a friends household furnishings.

Paid time off for moving

If you are moving because of your own decision, you are not entitled to the compensation of wages. The sole exception is for situations where your employer has transferred you to another workplace and thus the move is in its interest. In this case it must compensate your wage or salary in full.

Vacation vs. time off

From an economic standpoint, it is definitely more advantageous to take vacation time for your move, because you will be paid for that day. Another alternative is to do everything on a weekend, when Stěhování Praha works without any surcharge.

Moving during the period of notice

If you need time to properly prepare for all the changes, there is also the possibility of using time off to look for new employment. If you are in a standard two-month notice period, the employer must provide you with one half day a week to look for new work. These times can also be combined, so you can get up to two free days a month in total.

If you handed in your notice yourself, then this time off will be unpaid. If your employer terminated your employment due to obstacles on its part or due to a loss of eligibility to perform work for medical reasons, you are entitled to the time off to look for new work and the compensation of wages.
